A Study of Stress Identification and Coping Patterns in Patients on Hemodialysis

Abstract
This study was carried out to identify stress and coping patterns in patients on hemo-dialysis.
Data were collected from 63 patients receiving hemodylsis theraphy in 3 hospital hemodialysis units in Seoul, from January 13 to February 8, 1986.
The instruments used to collect data were a measuring scale for stress by Baldree et. al., and a coping scale by Jalowiec and Powers.
The results were as follows;
1. The mean score of the degree of stress was 3.811, while the maximum score was 5.
2. The stressors ranking highest were "cost factors", "Decrease in social life" and "limitation of physical activities" and the top physiological stressor was "fatigue". 3. The physical stress score experienced by respondants was higher than the psycho-logical stress score. (t=-3.18 p=0.002).
4. There was found to be a relationship between the sex variable and the score of stress.
5. The mean score of the degree of coping was 4.254, while the maximum score was 5.
6. The coping methods ranking highest were "Try to maintain some control over the situation" and "Draw on past experience to help you handle the situation."
7. Respondants use of problem oriented coping methods was significantly higher
than use of affective oriented methods (t=-8.92, p=0.000).
8. There was found to be a relationship between educational variable and score of
coping methods.
9. There was significant correlation between the respondent¡¯s stress score and coping score (r=0.420, p=0.000).
